Questions

What people ask us most

Do you take my insurance?

We take some insurance plans and confirm yours before the first session. We do not bill Medicare or Medicaid. If you need a clinician who does, we give you names.

What is a superbill and how do I use it?

A superbill is an itemized receipt you send to a plan that may reimburse out-of-network care. It carries a diagnosis code, and the person who holds the plan can see it. For a young person that is usually a parent. Your plan decides whether it pays anything.

What is a good faith estimate?

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of what care will cost before you start. If the final bill is $400 or more above it, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

How much does it cost and how do fees work?

Your clinician gives you the fee in writing before you start. How fees work, including receipts and reduced-fee spots, is on the fees page.

Can I use an HSA or FSA card?

Yes. You pay at the end of each session by card, and an HSA or FSA card works.

What happens in the first session?

It lasts 50 minutes. Your clinician explains how they work and the limits of confidentiality, asks which name and pronouns to use, and listens.

How often and how long are sessions?

A session lasts 50 minutes and a family session 60. Your clinician sets the pace with you; there is no set number of sessions.

Are you licensed where I live?

Each clinician is licensed in New York. By video you must be in New York during the session.

What do I do in a crisis?

Call or text 988, any time. In an emergency, call 911. Young people who are LGBTQ+ can also text START to 678-678 to reach the Trevor Project. Our messages are not monitored around the clock.

What is confidential and what are the limits?

What you say in sessions is private. The limits are a risk of serious harm to you or someone else, a court order, and the reports the law requires. Your clinician explains them in writing before you start.

Can you see my teen, and how does consent work?

Yes. Under 18, a parent or guardian gives consent for therapy to begin. After that, a teen's sessions stay with their own clinician, within the limits above.

What is your cancellation policy?

We ask for 24 hours' notice to change an appointment.

Did we miss yours?

Write to us, and we answer within one business day.
